On yet another drama filled night, Real Madrid outlasted Man City after penalties

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich booked their spots in the UEFA Champions League semifinals on Wednesday, respectively ousting Manchester City and Arsenal to do so.
The two sides are now slated to play each other when the competition resumes in two weeks' time, while Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund make up the semifinalists on the other side of the bracket.
Wednesday's scores
- Manchester City 1, Real Madrid 1 (teams tied 4-4 on aggregate, Real Madrid advance 4-3 on penalties)
- Bayern Munich 1, Arsenal 0 (Bayern advance 3-2 on aggregate)
Madrid advance on penalties
After last week's 3-3 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid took an early lead at the Etihad Stadium when Rodrygo scored in the 12th minute. They spent much of the game absorbing City's pressure and eventually conceded in the 76th minute, when Kevin De Bruyne scored to send the match to extra time.
City dominated again in extra time but neither side could break the deadlock, so the tie was decided on a penalty shootout. Though Ederson made a stop and converted his spotkick, it was Real Madrid's Andriy Lunin who was the hero after he made two saves to send his side to the semifinals for the fourth year in a row.
Bayern beat Arsenal
The teams played to a fairly even but goalless first half and things stayed the same way in the second half until Joshua Kimmich's 63rd minute header gave Bayern the lead. The goal effectively knocked the wind out of Arsenal's sails and allowed Bayern to rack up shot after shot as they raced to the finish line and though a second goal never came, it was enough for them to claim a 3-2 aggregate advantage.

Fun fact from the broadcast
With a penalty shootout just 15 minutes away, here's a little insight on Real Madrid's record on spotkicks this season -- they've earned seven penalties this season but converted just three.

Halftime of extra time
The game state hasn't changed much - City are still in charge of this one, boasting more than 70% of possession and four shots to Real Madrid's one. It's clear there are a lot of tired legs, though, and so the precision in front of goal hasn't been there. There hasn't been a single shot on target, though Rudiger's shot just before the break was the lone positive for Madrid. He ended up sending the ball over the bar, though.

Foden with a chance
99' Silva plays a wonderful ball to Foden, who is in the penalty area and seems likely to get a good shot off. Foden mishits the ball, though, offering a little gift to Real Madrid as he does so.

Extra time begins
City will go through extra time without Haaland, who comes off for Alvarez. He ends this tie without a goal and just 21 shots today but took five shots and mustered 0.83 expected goals, so it was a productive 90 minute shift from him.

Extra time it is
Seems fitting that the most high-profile of the Champions League quarterfinals would be the only one heading to extra time. After Real Madrid failed to get away with a game plan in which they just absorbed City's pressure, though, it's worth asking: Can they keep it up for another 30 minutes, or will they need to change their strategy to advance?

That's that in Munich
A bad week gets worse for Arsenal, whose first Champions League run in seven years ends in the quarterfinals. Despite some late glimpses, the game titled in Bayern's favor after Kimmich's goal and the chance to avoid a trophyless season continues for the German side.

Bayern near the finish line
84' Kimmich's header has effectively neutralized Arsenal, providing Bayern with the opportunities needed to grab another goal if they can. They have yet to do so but with 66% of the ball since the goal and six shots to Arsenal's one, it's clear who's in control of this game at this point. As long as Bayern can keep things up for another few minutes, that semifinal berth just might be theirs.

De Bruyne nearly with a second
82' A few short minutes after he scored the equalizer, De Bruyne was close to a second. The finish was arguably easier than the goal he just scored but he cannot find a way to get it into the back of the net. Can City actually finish this one out in regular time, though?

City's equalizer comes
76' The equalizer City have been searching for for 60-plus minutes is finally here, courtesy of De Bruyne. Substitute Doku plays a big part but it's De Bruyne who finishes the shot from an angle, making things 1-1 on the day and 4-4 on aggregate. Extra time looms with 14 minutes plus stoppage time left on the clock.

Same old for City
71' City are dominating this second half with more than 70% of possession and six shots, but they continue to struggle to find the back of the net. Three of their shots have been on target and they have just 0.24 expected goals, while Real Madrid have 0.05 expected goals off their lone shot of the half. Is it time to panic for the reigning champions?

Bayern take the lead
63' At long last, the deadlock is broken in this tie! Kimmich gets his head on the ball from close range and buries the shot, giving his side a 1-0 lead on the day and a 3-2 lead on aggregate.

And we're back
No subs at halftime for any of the four teams playing today, so it looks like the managers are still sticking to the game plans they started with.

Meanwhile in Munich
58' It would not be fair to accuse these teams of not trying to play for a goal, but there's not much to say when the last shot of the game was more than 10 minutes ago. There's a quietly tense feeling about the way Bayern and Arsenal are playing, and it's worth wondering if those two will just ride out that plan until the very end or if the managers will opt to change tack with about a half hour left on the clock.

City racking up shots
38' City are now up to nine shots since Rodrygo's goal but they are struggling to find their equalizer, despite mustering 1.47 expected goals so far. The latest attempt finds the side netting, forcing the question: Will City finally get the goal they're looking for, or is it going to be one of those nights where it won't come off?

More chances for City
51' It's early in the second half but City are picking up from where they left off, with Grealish already registering a shot on goal. The question worth asking, though, is if their inability to score will also follow City into the second 45.

Guerreiro close
47' Guerreiro nearly scores Bayern's go-ahead goal but the ball hits the crossbar and the post before heading out for a corner, and nothing much comes from it.
