Escape to one of Oregon’s treehouses (2024)

It’s easy to see the appeal of staying the night in a treehouse. Maybe you want to feel closer to nature or to escape the reach of the internet. Maybe you want to see what life would be like as a fairy, Ewok or woodland elf. Whatever your motivation, you can choose from dozens of treehouses across Oregon. From glamping to truly glam, there’s a treetop stay for everyone.

This spring, I drove into the foothills above the Oregon coastal town of Langlois to try out the treehouse experience for myself. Tucked in a pocket of forest overlooking a creek and small waterfall, Heartland House exceeded my expectations. Special amenities aside (including a sauna and outdoor soaking tubs), waking up in the vibrant green understory to birdsong instead of cell phone notifications was definitely a highlight of the trip.

Heartland House is just one of many treehouse experiences offered across the state including two treehouse-specific resorts and many more options through rental sites such as Airbnb. Here are a few Oregon treehouses to choose from, including Heartland House.

Vertical Horizons Treehouse Paradise

Located in Cave Junction, this treehouse resort has four houses: the Cottage, Calypso, Shiitake and Excalifir. The resort provides disc golf, catch and release fishing, recreational tree climbing, mushroom picking, crafts and outdoor movie nights.

Details: Vertical Horizons’ treehouses accommodate 2-6 guests, depending on which one you book. The Cottage, Calypso and Shiitake each have a half bath and access to a guest bath house for showers, and Excalifir has its own full bathroom.

Out ‘n About Treesort

This resort in Takilma has 18 treehouses to choose from, including one that rises 47 feet from the forest floor, some that require crossing multiple suspension bridges, and three satellite treehouses that are “420-friendly,” one of which is actually a sailboat. The treesort also offers horseback riding, rafting, crafts and ziplining through the trees.

Details: These treehouses accommodate 2-6 guests, and have a full bath, half bath or guest bath house access depending on which one you book.

Tree House in the City

Secluded enough to feel like an escape, but not so off the grid that you can’t get food delivered, this treehouse is in Southwest Portland next to Marshall Park. The park is a natural area in a 400-foot wide canyon with walking trails and views of Tryon Creek.

Details: Accommodates 2 guests with 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom.

Wald House

Also in Portland, this treehouse is a stunner. With interesting 1979 architecture and the interior lovingly furnished by its two designer hosts, the trees outside the towering windows aren’t the only thing to catch your eye. The property is on a 5.5 mile bike loop and is next to Marquam Nature Park, a 204-acre park of undeveloped forest, which features over 7 miles of trails.

Details: Accommodates up to 5 guests with 2 bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms.

Oregon Treehouse Getaway

This charming, octagonal treehouse in Dallas has a tree trunk running through the center of the living space, and windows on all sides provide ample natural light. Head out to the deck to enjoy the gas fire pit overlooking the pond. Kayaks are also available to rent.

Details: Accommodates 4 guests with 2 beds and 1 bathroom.

Treehouse on the Oregon Central Coast

This treehouse in Yachats is perched up a Sitka Spruce in Gerdemann Botanic Preserve, a 3.5 acre private garden that neighbors Siuslaw National Forest and is just minutes from the ocean. The hosts here offer personal tours of the garden with information about the plants and wildlife.

Details: Accommodates 2 guests with 1 bed and 1 half bath. A shower is available in the main house, about 100 feet from the treehouse.

The Bluebird House

With no TV or wifi to distract you from the ocean views from the deck, this treehouse in Gold Beach is situated on seven acres of farm, forest, and beach. According to the many positive reviews, the hike down to the private beach takes about 45 minutes and visiting with the friendly dogs and donkeys on the property is often a highlight of the visit.

Details: Accommodates 4 guests with 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom.

Beautiful, Magical, Treehouse

Living up to its name, this treehouse is off the grid on 20 acres of forest at the base of Mount Hood. The treehouse welcomes you with a spiral staircase wrapped around a fir tree trunk. Your stay includes access to a spring-fed, 1-acre pond with kayaks, a zipline, and a rowboat. If you have a group larger than four, you can request to add on a Glamping Tent, the Pond Cottage or the Tentsile (a hanging tent suspended in the trees).

Details: Accommodates 4 guests (ages 7 and up in the treehouse) with 3 beds, a half bathroom, and an outdoor shower (only available when the temperature is above 40 degrees).

Heartland House

Drive about 9 miles inland from Langlois past sweeping ocean views and rolling hills of grazing cows and sheep to unplug and relax in this remote treehouse. Enjoy the gas fire pit, sauna and twin outdoor soaking tubs on the deck while listening to the rushing creek below. The outdoor bathroom is rustic, but the interior of the house is clean, heated and welcoming.

Details: Accommodates 2 guests with 1 bed and outdoor shower, sink and composting toilet.
