I’m not sure y’all know this yet.

You probably do.

But just in case ya don’t…

I love coffee.

It is my favorite drink. And my favorite food! If it was possible to just drink coffee for all my meals and still be healthy, or not die, I would.

100%

Not really, but kinda 😉

And having something like this Mexican coffee liqueur to add to a cup (especially during the holidays or special occasion) is just so fun!

This makes some great gifts

Just imagine, having a bunch of little bottles of this to gift to people during Christmas or for a birthday. What a cute and lovely gift that would be!

I just love me some handmade gifts. And this kahlua is just the perfect one for coffee-obsessed people.

Not naming any names, just sayin’…

I love bottling it in half-pint mason jars and tying some jute twine around the rim with a little tag that says “Kahlua” in pretty handwriting.

Homemade Kahlua Recipe

  • 1 liter vodka 80 proof or higher or other liquor
  • 2 vanilla beans
  • 4 cups strong coffee or 3 of super strong coffee
  • 8 cups brown sugar

Step one:

Take a swig of the vodka.

I’m serious.

You need to make some room for the vanilla beans. Or it might overflow.

It is for the greater good.

Then plop your vanilla beans in the jar and screw the cap on. Let them sit together and extract for 6 weeks. I like to stick a piece of blue painters tape (cause my husband is a painter) on it that says the date its done so I don’t forget.

Cause ya know, mom brain.

Listen to this on your favorite podcast app!

Step two:

After it has been 6 weeks you can move on to the next steps.

Make some coffee. Make either 4 cups of strong coffee or 3 cups of SUPER duper strong coffee. Plus some to drink. Cause that’s always good.

Step three:

Mix the hot coffee and sugar and gently heat the mixture. Just make sure you don’t burn the coffee. Burned coffee is no good. And heat until sugar is dissolved.

Step four:

Let cool before you add the vanilla vodka, because we don’t want to burn off any of the alcohol with hot coffee.

Step five:

Strain off the vanilla beans and mix the alcohol with the coffee and sugar.

Then pour it into jars or bottles!

Use in your coffee instead of your normal sweetener and enjoy!

Storage

I like to store mine in mason jars. I put the ones I’ll gift into pints or half pints. Because of the alcohol and sugar this will stay good at room temperature for up to 3 years. Store it in a container that can be tightly sealed (like a mason jar), and store it in a cool dark area, away from direct sunlight or a lot of heat. Kahlua can decline in quality over time though. So although it may not spoil and grow mold or become rancid, it should be used within 3 years of being made.

  • 1/4 cup vodka, or to taste

In a saucepan stir together the coffee, the 1/2 cup cream, the Kahlúa, and the vodka and heat the mixture over moderate heat until it is hot. Divide the mixture among heated mugs and garnish each drink with some of the whipped cream.

Kahlua hot chocolate

  • 4 ounces hot coffee or espresso whichever you prefer
  • 4 ounces homemade hot cocoa
  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 2 ounces kahlua

Prepare coffee and cocoa. Divide the hot coffee and cocoa between two mugs or heat proof glasses. Add an ounce of vodka and an ounce of kahlua to each drink. Stir to combine and top generously with marshmallows and a sprinkling of cocoa powder.

Pumpkin spice kahlua coffee

  • 2 oz. vodka
  • 1 oz. Kahlua
  • 1 1/2 oz. pumpkin spice creamer
